History of Cosmetic Tattooing

Tattooing throughout the ages has consisted of cutting or pricking the skin and inserting pigment, charcoal or other colorants into the scratch. Devices used to prick the skin have included sharpened bones, thorns, knives and needles. Some Eskimo and Siberian peoples used a needle to draw a color-coated thread under the skin, tracing the design with the thread. Color tattooing became highly developed among the Maoris of New Zealand, some of whom tattooed elaborate designs on their faces to disguise expressions of fear and as a rite of passage into manhood.

The earliest evidence of tattooing is thought to date back to the ice age, possibly as far back as 8000BC. Body decorations were probably used to imitate the color of animals, to provide camouflage or had a religious significance.

Compared to all other countries cosmetic tattooing has just started making waves in the USA as a result of stars such as Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, and Pamela Anderson who had/have had permanent cosmetics.
